When you’re looking forward to your new arrival, you’ll want to create the perfect nursery space to relax and cuddle your bundle of joy.

So, how do you get it right? As you and your little one will be spending lots of time together in your new nursery, it’s important to make sure the space is warm and inviting. Here are some ways to create the perfect nursery space for you and your baby…

Do’s and Don’ts for your nursery space

  • Do: create a colour palette for the nursery. Think about soft pastel colours that are relaxing and soothing, such as pale yellow and mint green. These are gender-neutral colours too, so they’re the perfect option if you don’t yet know the sex of your baby.

  • Don’t: leave everything till the last minute. Babies don’t always arrive on schedule and once your new baby has arrived, you’re unlikely to have any spare time for decorating for quite a while!

  • Do: decide on curtains, carpets and fabrics before painting or wallpapering the space. It’s much easier to match up paint colours to your existing furnishings, rather than the other way round.

  • Don’t: forget about your own needs. A comfortable nursing chair for those night-time feeds is absolutely essential. Even the smallest of nurseries is likely to have room for a stylish accent chair. But if you have more space you might like to treat yourself to a gentle, rocking recliner chair – perfect for soothing baby back to sleep after an early morning feed!

  • Do: make safety a priority. It won’t be long until your tiny baby becomes an active toddler! So, remember to cover plug sockets, tuck trailing wires out of sight, and tape down rugs to avoid slips, trips and falls.

  • Don’t: forget to block out the light. Babies need complete darkness to get the best night’s sleep, so blackout curtains or blinds can be helpful.

Putting your nursery together

It’s important to consider the cot, as this is where your baby will initially spend most of their time. Fabric bumpers and pretty bedding sets can tie in with your overall colour theme and look great with co-ordinating curtains and blinds.

You’re going to need plenty of storage for your baby’s clothes, as well as a changing station stocked with spare nappies, wipes and plenty of hand sanitiser. Don’t forget to plan in some storage for all those outgrown clothes too. Babies grow at an alarming rate, so what fits perfectly one week is likely to be too small within a matter of weeks.

It’s a good idea to get the bulk of the work done earlier on in your pregnancy when you still have plenty of energy. Once you’ve got your furniture in place and decided on soft furnishings, you can go ahead and decorate the room. And then, later on in your pregnancy, you can focus on the finer details, such as adding lamps, toys and decorative elements.

Making a comfortable space for yourself

The nursery is where your baby will be sleeping, but it’s also going to be a place where you’ll be spending a lot of time too, particularly in the early days. So, make sure you put your needs first when you’re putting together your baby’s nursery space.

Create a nursing area with the most comfortable chair you can find. Some women find a chair with supportive armrests offers the best support for night-time feeds, while others prefer to use a pillow to support their baby. Make sure there’s a table or shelf within easy reach where you can store wipes, bottles and nipple pads. A carefully positioned nightlight or lamp will give you much-needed lighting, and you can stock up on magazines for those longer night feeding sessions.

If your nursery is too small to comfortably accommodate a nursing space for you then think about where else might be suitable, such as your own bedroom or a spare room. Creating the perfect space for your new arrival is one of the most important things you’ll ever do. But remember, this is also the time to have fun and make the most of every moment, so it’s worth spending time getting it right.
