Thinking of redecorating or upscaling your bedroom this summer?

Thinking of redecorating or upscaling your bedroom this summer? We look at the top bedroom design trends that are all the rage in 2022 to give you some fresh ideas.

A comfortable haven

Prolonged periods spent at home during the pandemic have given us a thirst for sheer comfort. Your bedroom should be a comfy haven for you to escape your daily stresses. If you have an old mattress, it’s probably no longer very supportive, so replace with a new one. Always check whether you need a soft, medium or hard mattress. And don’t forget your pillows; there are even options for side sleepers!

Pure relaxation

Along with the comfort theme, add a few plush cushions to make it easier to kick back to read a good book or place a comfy, compact reclining chair by a window. Add a luxurious throw, which is useful in cooler seasons. Also think about adding items that help you feel calm, such as essential oils, reed diffusers or scented candles. Put up treasured family photos to create your own personal gallery.

Sustainable textiles

One of the top trends this year is using sustainable materials and products, wherever possible. Manufacturers are now making more eco-friendly bedding, filled with organic fibres like bamboo or lyocell, which is sourced from raw material wood. Upcycle old bedroom units or side tables by giving them a lick of paint. Frenchic paint creates a soft, chalky finish and is free from VOCs, solvents and toxins.

Patterns and colour drenching

The recent trend for feature wallpapers continues, especially more graphic style prints. Create a statement wall that connects to the room colour scheme. Bear in mind the effect might be overwhelming if you cover every wall, although this look is trending with younger generations. Colour drenching is another trend which involves painting everything in the room in the same colour using accent tones for woodwork.

Trending bedroom colour palettes

This year’s trending bedroom colours are lilac, blue, green, brown, and Farrow & Balls ‘Red Earth’, which is a light terracotta. Many of these shades nod towards the big biophilic design trend this year, which uses design principles to connect people to nature. Colour palettes found in nature are popular, with earthy tones representing soil, soothing lilac blossom, greens echoing plants and foliage, and bright sky blues.

Accentuate with an accent chair

Once you’ve chosen your colour palette, consider adding an accent chair to your bedroom. Choose a glamorous midnight blue velvet with a shell-style back or put your feet up with a soft pink linen accent chair with footstool. An occasional chair can be used to link an accent colour. Blue walls, for example, look stunning with warm orange or yellow accents so that you could offset with a mustard antique velvet chair.

Panelling and headboards

Wall panels are back, and they are being fitted and painted in a wide range of hues in line with the current colour drenching trend. Large, padded feature headboards are also bang on trend in the bedroom this year. As a result, there has been a boom in different styles and materials, from geometric patterns to floral designs. Pinterest has reported an 88% increase in people searching for “statement headboards”.

Ottoman beds and storage

The Ottoman bed has made a comeback this year, but if you can’t afford a whole bed, why not opt for an end-of-bed storage bench? Ottoman style storage benches are available in a wide range of colours and materials. Choose from a luxurious soft pink, vibrant berry or blue velvet, or a more neutral charcoal linen. A practical yet stylish piece of bedroom furniture, simply match to your chosen colour palette.

Your bedroom is your sanctuary, a place of relaxation after a hard day’s work. So, make sure you design this room in a way that will allow you to relax and unwind. Limit distractions, keep the room as clutter-free as possible, and curate your bedroom with carefully placed objects. And don’t forget, your choice of bedroom chair will make all the difference.
